4.1 Daily bread In this first unit of the 4th grade, across the subjects, the pupils are looking at food; food they like, preserving food, being safe and clean with food, etc. In English the pupils will look at a food we eat every day; bread! The competence for this unit is the following: The pupil, by applying their knowledge of bread and the bread-making process (including the effect of the microorganism ‘yeast’ on bread) acquired from various sources: information text, story and observation, will make and describe bread. In order to achieve this competence, pupils will first taste and describe different types of bread. They will use the traditional tale of The Little Red Hen to work on the process of growing grain to making bread and work on oral and drama skills through story, rhyme and song. |

4.2 Toys and games In this second unit of the 4th grade, across the subjects, the pupils are working on toys and games. The competence for this unit is the following: The pupil, after working with various resources: visual, manipulative and oral and written texts (informative, instructive and narrative), will describe toys and games using the language worked on. In order to achieve this competence, pupils will play and learn different games and discuss aspects of fair play to enjoy playing games respectfully. They will also look at toys and analyse and describe the components using SCUMP (size/shape, colour, use, material, personal opinion). Songs and a story are used to develop language, and drama techniques. |

4.3 Pedal power In this third unit of the 4th grade, across the subjects, the pupils are working on travelling. The competence for this unit is the following: The pupil, after working with information about bicycles - provided from various sources - will use their knowledge to design some bicycles, describing their parts and uses, using the appropriate language worked on and showing a responsible and inclusive attitude to cycling and bike users. In order to achieve this competence, pupils will look at different means of transport and then focus on the bicycle; types of bikes, uses for bikes, bike safety, parts of bikes and the functions of those parts. They will also see how the bicycle has changed over the years and act out the true story of a racing grandfather. The pupils are invited to research and plan their own ‘tour’. |

4.4 Seed, plant, flower In this fourth unit of the 4th grade, across the subjects, the pupils will be looking at relationships and how humans and animals reproduce and how they change over the course of their lifetime. The competence for this unit is the following: The pupil, after working with various resources: visual, oral and written informative texts, will explain the life cycle of flowering plants (germination, pollination, fertilisation, seed production and seed dispersal) using the language worked on. In order to achieve this competence, pupils will start looking at the cycle of the seasons before starting with seeds; edible seeds, seed dispersal and a song and story about seeds. They will then look at flowering plants and dissect flowers to discover the different parts and learn about their functions; including pollination and fertilization. There is an opportunity to view flower paintings and paint a flower. |

4.5 In the playground In this fifth unit of the 4th grade, across the subjects, the pupils will be looking at sports and games; how we use our bodies and how we cooperate and include everyone in our games. The competence for this unit is the following: The pupil, after working with various resources: visual, physical, oral and written information texts, will give instructions to play a playground game using the language worked on, body movement and coordination skills, and showing respect for game rules and an inclusive attitude to fellow players. In order to achieve this competence, pupils will learn a variety of ‘choosing’ rhymes and then follow instructions to play clapping games, skipping games, circle games and running games using a number of action words. There is also a chance to work on fairplay and inclusivity through story, role play and discussion. |
