4.1 Daily bread

In this first unit of the 4th grade, across the subjects, the pupils are looking at food; food they like, preserving food, being safe and clean with food, etc. In English the pupils will look at a food we eat every day; bread!

The competence for this unit is the following:

The pupil, by applying their knowledge of bread and the bread-making process (including the effect of the microorganism ‘yeast’ on bread) acquired from various sources: information text, story and observation, will make and describe bread.

In order to achieve this competence, pupils will first taste and describe different types of bread. They will use the traditional tale of The Little Red Hen to work on the process of growing grain to making bread and work on oral and drama skills through story, rhyme and song.
A simple experiment serves to see how yeast works to make bread rise and in the final task, the pupils follow the recipe to design and make bread rolls and reflect on the process and the product.

4.2 Toys and games

In this second unit of the 4th grade, across the subjects, the pupils are working on toys and games.
In English, they will also look at toys and games; playing games to practice some useful areas of English, and talking about and describing toys and games.

The competence for this unit is the following:

The pupil, after working with various resources: visual, manipulative and oral and written texts (informative, instructive and narrative), will describe toys and games using the language worked on.

In order to achieve this competence, pupils will play and learn different games and discuss aspects of fair play to enjoy playing games respectfully. They will also look at toys and analyse and describe the components using SCUMP (size/shape, colour, use, material, personal opinion). Songs and a story are used to develop language, and drama techniques.
In the final task, the pupils choose a favourite toy or game to show and tell to the class and upload their presentation to a digital board.

4.3 Pedal power

In this third unit of the 4th grade, across the subjects, the pupils are working on travelling.
In English, they will look at means of transport in general and then focus on the bicycle.

The competence for this unit is the following:

The pupil, after working with information about bicycles - provided from various sources - will use their knowledge to design some bicycles, describing their parts and uses, using the appropriate language worked on and showing a responsible and inclusive attitude to cycling and bike users.

In order to achieve this competence, pupils will look at different means of transport and then focus on the bicycle; types of bikes, uses for bikes, bike safety, parts of bikes and the functions of those parts. They will also see how the bicycle has changed over the years and act out the true story of a racing grandfather. The pupils are invited to research and plan their own ‘tour’.
For the final task, the pupils apply their knowledge of the functions of the parts of the bicycle to make sketch adaptations of bikes to answer to specific needs.

4.4 Seed, plant, flower

In this fourth unit of the 4th grade, across the subjects, the pupils will be looking at relationships and how humans and animals reproduce and how they change over the course of their lifetime.
In English, they will look at the reproduction of flowering plants.

The competence for this unit is the following:

The pupil, after working with various resources: visual, oral and written informative texts, will explain the life cycle of flowering plants (germination, pollination, fertilisation, seed production and seed dispersal) using the language worked on.

In order to achieve this competence, pupils will start looking at the cycle of the seasons before starting with seeds; edible seeds, seed dispersal and a song and story about seeds. They will then look at flowering plants and dissect flowers to discover the different parts and learn about their functions; including pollination and fertilization. There is an opportunity to view flower paintings and paint a flower.
For the final task, the pupils will make a cycle book ordering the life cycle of the apple tree.

4.5 In the playground

In this fifth unit of the 4th grade, across the subjects, the pupils will be looking at sports and games; how we use our bodies and how we cooperate and include everyone in our games.
In English, we will take the topic of games into the playground.

The competence for this unit is the following: The pupil, after working with various resources: visual, physical, oral and written information texts, will give instructions to play a playground game using the language worked on, body movement and coordination skills, and showing respect for game rules and an inclusive attitude to fellow players.

In order to achieve this competence, pupils will learn a variety of ‘choosing’ rhymes and then follow instructions to play clapping games, skipping games, circle games and running games using a number of action words. There is also a chance to work on fairplay and inclusivity through story, role play and discussion.
For the final task, the pupils will prepare the instructions for a game and teach their classmates.
